Old thread site

G’Day All,
Some time over the last few months I viewed and thread on a easy southern polar alignment using a piece of wood an a compasses .You mark the Mag South on the timber then you work out what the true south is then you mark it on the timber then you align your tripod to the true south . Can any one help with what site I should be looking at so I can make this device up to help to align my pier when I start to build a home for my telescope

Hi Ian,

I don't know about the bit of wood, but if you ar only lining up your pier with south, then it doesn't need to be too accurate. You should have some form of adjustment device on top of the pier to fine tune it later.

In the maentime, if you just take the long axis of the southern cross out four and a half times from the point. That is the celestial south you should line it up on.

Have a look at a couple of the illustrations here

Hope it helps.

Baz.

I think you may be referring to Dennis' "Sophisticated, state-of-the-art POM "
It's in this thread: http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/s...&highlight=pom

Good work Andrew – your sleuthing and delving into the rich history of Ice In Space turned up the post!

Cheers
