Now I'm really excited.....Canons New EOS5D II

The new Canon full frame 5D replacement 5D II has been announced today (as predicted) at $2699 US. I've been waiting for this for a while, uncertain as to whether to buy another 2/3 DSLR or wait for the 5D replacement.

BTW it also has movie capability (FULL HD) reported at one site as 30 FPS, could this be the ultimate planetary cam as well....???

If it's equivalent to $2699 US here it won't be too bad ($3500) and remember street price is always less than RRP. Now how can we get the $AU back up.....

Ya bet me to it Phil, I paid $3,200.00 for my last 5d only two months ago so this new one is really in the ball park, so to speak.

The only thing that disappoints me is the lack of inbuilt flash, I often used the flash in daylight portrait shots for a little bit of fill, if I go the 5D II I'll have to lug (and buy) a Speedlight around as well.

Yep it's unfortunate Phil that they can't squeeze in a flash on the FF bodies but believe me you're better off with a proper speedlight on top than just the popup.
I know it's convinient but I seldom use the popup on the 20D, much prefer to use the 580EX for better flash control and also avoid somewhat the shadow cast by the popup over the lens.

Looks nice, if I go for another camera it will be a full frame 5D...I wouldn't upgrade to only the 50D.

Wonder if the wife will believe the new 5D only costs around $1000 with a free L series lens.....lol

Phil, I have to agree with Leon about the flashes, on both my Nikon D80 and my Canon 350D, I never use the pop up flashes, always use the 580EX on the canon and the SB-600 on the Nikon.. the poptops are convenient, however they lack the customization and calibration of the speedlites. And when you're looking at something at the quality level of a 5D, do you really want a $20 afterthought built in flash illuminating the subject to a substandard level??

John, I know you asked Phil, but I'm gonna throw in my 2c. The 50D IMHO represents fantastic value for money, Its specs indicate it will be a real performer, with a very powerful user definable feature set, and at a very acceptable price range... Its on my "To Buy" list already.

I don't know why you would want it for a Planetary Camera Phil. Except possibly to record the HD movie in 14bit (but I doubt it- read

Go for it, you know you want it. If you need a place to stay there will be plenty of room in the new Obs.

With a full frame pentaprism to illuminate your viewfinder there is simply no room for a pop up flash. See there is a reason for everything. I have a 580EX and compared to the popup flash on my 20D lets just say there is no comparison. It was worth every cent. I can illuminate a rather large 30m hall will the 580EX pointed up with diffuser extended and then there are no shadows or red eye.

You didn't read the spec properly herr ponders.... thats for full frame still shots, the video rate is 30FPS.

Ok so you could get away with an f/33 300mm scope (FL 10000) with a 4x barlow

Wonder what sort of compression involved?
