Extension pillar

I have a 15cm refractor on a CG5 goto mount and tripod. One of its little 'features' is driving me batty. It likes to drive the focusser/eyepiece/finderscope into a tripod leg and so lose alignment. I've learnt to do long slews manually and just 'finish off' with the goto but it still catches me out at times. Also, I can't safely observe near the zenith.

An extension pillar appears to be a good solution (a full pier would be better) but they aren't made for a CG5. York Optical are selling an extension pier for an EQ6 and, as the tripod looks identical to mine, I imagined that it would do the job. However York Optical think the thread on the centre bolt may be different.

Does anyone know whether you can put an EQ6 on the tripod that comes with an EQ5? If you can then the extension pillar should work.

thanks,
Dave
