Computer hate then

After having a hard drive error on my old lappy i got my tower out to put in the observatory. After a day of installing all the drivers and software for everything camera etc. Just about finished so all was looking good for tonight when you guessed it this computer shut down and now will not start. These bloody things make me mad. So now back to square one reinstalling windows.

I hear ya mine crashed and i put an old 40 gig hard drive in it ...and my new 360 gig is in the draw waiting for me to put xp on it or ghost it ......whatever i do its a time consuming pain in the rear....we could spend that quality time on something else....cheers Kev.

Awwww Phil i feel ya pain mine crashed a few weeks ago too and i spent many sleepless nites fixing it

And as addicted as we all are to our p.c.'s....it sucks bigtime when we have difficulties. I can relate. And it's amazing how fast a hard drive can fill up. lol. I use photobucket a lot these days to save my hard drive as much as possible. I have THOUSANDS of graphics and pictures saved there, all for free. The trick is to create the files to get the most storage for free.

Sorry for your difficulties.

What saved me tons on my old desktop was Norton Go back. It'd at least take me back to a day earlier when I was functioning and it'd get me online.

I was lucky to install windows XP as a repair and that has fixed the problem. The good thing is i still have all my file. Did not loss a thing thank god.

A bit late for me to offer troubleshooting advice, but when you said it wouldn't start, could you at least boot into safe mode?

No i could not boot it in safe mode.

I try to burn all my raws and processed pictures on DVDs and get them off my Hard Drives. Hard Drives eventually fail. That's a fact. Internal or external. Don't rely on them. What you can do is get a docking base (USB or E-SATA - approx $80) and image [Acronis is pretty cool] all your BOOT HDs on one 500GB HD (approx $100), unplug it and shelf it. Only use/power it in the event of a major crash. For the rest of the data, images ,etc... just burn lots of DVDs.

Amy - you have a huge problem using PhotoBucket - they do NOT guarrantee the safety of your files. If they go as a company, or if they have server/storage issues you're sunk.

Gee, I must be lucky or doing something right. Never had a hard drive go down in 20 years. Had mboards die and RAM go faulty but HDD just keeps spinning on.
I'll second Chris on the backup. Best to burn to DVD or CD and store somewhere Dry, Cool and Dark. Server HDD take a reall hammering and can go down a lot more often than the home ones.
