Advice on new DSLR

My wife has finally said you can get a new camera. Will use mainly for regular photos but want to dabble in astrophotography. Am looking at either the Pentax K100 or K200 or the Canon 400D. Anyone have any advice?

Dale

Hi Dale

What about the Canon 450D? It's better than the 400D, thanks to LiveView and other cool settings.

For astrophotography, the Canon is much better suited than the Pentax.

Do you have lenses?

Or then you could opt for the more robust 40D, Discount Digital Photographics are selling the 40D for $1099 (body Only). I agree with Mike which ever model, if you intend to use it for Astrophotography, your better off with a Canon.

Hi Dale,

I would highly recommend the the Canon 450D or if you can afford it go for the 40D.

Both are very well suited to Astrophotography mainly because of the LiveView function and are great for general daytime photography.

Yep, definetly Canon, as stated they are just a cut above the rest for Astro-Photography.

Take it from me go with the Canon if you can afford it, one of the few cameras that has dedicated PC control software that works well.

I'm stuck with a Pentax K100d, although a good camera does not stack up to one of the Canon range overall.

I bought a 40D enthusiast kit.

It's a much better camera than the 400D (and 450D) in my humble opinion.

Buying a EF 70-200mm f2.8 L IS , a dropin LPF, and a TC40NS shortly .... then I will be ready to rock and roll for wide field imaging.

Canon 1000d will be available in August. Also has LiveView less function than 400d but very cheap Body only around $700 new. I have a 400d since Christmas. Very happy with it except no LiveView. Considering getting a 1000d and have it modified with Eric further down the track.

Thanks for all the advice. Am leaning towards the 1000d. What are the modifications you mentioned?
