Exclamation strange sight

My daughter, located in Lismore New South Wales, on July 11 at 9.15 pm saw a bright white object in the eastern sky moving fast and as she watched it approach it then exploded, as if it enterd the atmosphere. It was not a rocket or firework she is quite adamant. Did anyone else see this? Would it be a piece of space junk. She is a very sane intelligent woman?

Hi Helen

Sounds like it was probably a fireball/bolide.

They're always a great sight!

Hello Helen,

Welcome to Ice In Space!

I’m uncertain what your daughter may have seen, but a good candidate is a meteorite. Here is a link to some information that may be of interest.

I understand that most man-made space junk is tracked by various Government Agencies and from memory, the re-entry of a significant piece of space debris is usually picked up by the media.

Cheers

Dennis
