Beaten the domain name scammers

A nice little win for me today.

Our website is named after Jenny's and my property - "Omaroo".

The domain name "omaroo.net" was all that was available four years ago when we started the site, and "omaroo.com" was taken by someone else in the US.

Well, last month I had an aggressively-worded email from a third party stating that they had recently "acquired" the domain "omaroo.com" and asking whether I would like to buy it for US$599. They argued that the ".com" postfix was far more "powerful" and that I would be mad to miss out on such a deal. They continued to say that if I were not to buy it from them they'd put it to an "alternate" use (whatever that was). It almost sounded as though they intended to make me feel that it would be used against me if I were not to buy it from them.

I looked up the address and it was indeed parked under the these guys' whois details.

I wrote back stating that I was very happy with the ".net" postfix, and that I had absolutely no interest in taking the ".com" variant. I also let them know that I though that their type of business was abhorent and a nasty way to make money out of people.

These emails came thick and fast for 3 weeks until I finally looked up the availability today...and hey presto! It was available! They obviously gave up and let it go - knowing that they'd never get their US$600 out of me.

I feel all warm and fuzzy after registering it myself with my registrar for US$9.95.

Hi Chris,

I can let you have Omaroo.net.au for only $699 AUD!

Great opportunity to get in on the ground floor!

MUCH better than Omaroo.com anyway. I will consider swapping it for a 10" Skywatcher Collapsible DOB though.

What a deal!

Well done! Good to see the good guys win one for a change.

Cheers

The other Chris

I've set it up so that .com points to .net for a while. I'll gradually swap them as time goes on.

The .com domain name has already propagated to my local DNS, so gee it's quick these days!

Sorry - didn't see the post until this morning.

I use www.dreamhost.com - one of these ultra-cheap hosting services out of the US. I find performance very good for the US$9.50 I pay per month for 7TB (yes, 7 terrabytes) of available bandwidth and 360Gb of disk. Whilst the servers are shared between MANY users, I find that being in Australia gives my users better peformance during our hours in comparison to that the US users get during theirs.

They do also provide domain registration for US$9.95 per year if that's all you want.
