bit of excitement lastnight..

i dont think ive ever been as scared as i was about 9:45pm lastnight when i noticed our house and back yard filling with thick electrical smelling smoke.

immediately i thought our house was on fire so i told everyone to get out and call for help while i tried to find it, after frantically turning off the power and poking my head up the manhole i was VERY relieved to find that it wasnt coming from the house.. but then where was it coming from?

i ran down to our shed but that was fine too (at this stage the fireys were on their way) the smoke was getting thicker and nastier when i finally noticed that it was coming from the whirly on top of our neighbours shed, i breathed a big sigh of relief and actually smiled (you'll see why)

its one of those things you never think will happen to you and when you really think it is, you just dont know what to do first and ive done a few firefighting courses since i work on big boats at sea. very very scary stuff.

i still dont get it, i was talking to the firemen afterwards and they said that it was absolutely choccas and to the roof, plus like i said before its a BIG shed, surely there has to be more than 18?

Hehe, I knew what was up as soon as I read electrical-smoke+shed+whirlybird.
My prev neighbours had done exactly the same thing - minus the fire, but!... I knew where they lived before(same street- their dad owns both houses) and that place had a shed go the same way as your neighbour... rofl.
Actually, the previous tenants in my house (rental) did the same thing, there's a hook in the garden shed ceiling(to hang the light) and expanda-foam sealant everywhere(to stop tell-tale light getting out) and most damning... mixture ratio's for 'gro' and 'bloom' fertilisers written on the wall in perm marker pen

EDIT: Oh yeah, at a prev workplace there was a yard across the road with a couple of shipping containers, I rock up to work after a day off and my workmates said I shoulda been there yesterday.... for the drug bust across the road. Massive amount of plants apparently.
They must've thought that setting up in a light industrial area would get around any suspicions about high power usage... they didn't factor the shipping containers glowing white hot in the police helicopters infra-red camera!

It must have been pretty scary thinking that your house was on fire. You must have been releaved when you found out the smoke wasn't coming from your property.

yep it was definately a big relief, in more ways than one.

we already knew what he was upto and reported it numerous times after having dodgy people in our back yard trying to get into his shed. but it seems the police arent interested until it catches fire.
we wanted to talk to him first without running to the police and say look this just isnt on, we have people trying to get to your shed from our yard but he locked himself inside and hid.

i have never felt safe in my own back yard, especially while im out with my scope with no lights on etc.

there was one night where i was imaging and noticed a noise in the bushes which turned out to be someone hiding in there, didnt realise i was there until it was too late for them but not having my phone on me i wasnt going to leave my equipment there while i went inside so i just had to hope i looked big and scary enough and he didnt have a gun or anything, luckily he jumped the fence when i let him know i knew he was there, i used the flash from my dslr to scare him a bit too.

atleast now i can feel a bit more secure, atleast until he sets it all up again (these people always get away with it)

i just dont like the way the media has put it out there saying that we saw smoke coming from his shed and then rang the fireys because that is NOT what happened, we feared that it was OUR house on fire and thats where the trucks responded to, i just hope we dont get hassled by him because of that.

Hi Tj, I hope he doesn't go for something a bit more quicker and easier to turn a dollar like a chemical lab.

When I did my village firefighter course with the RFS which allows me to attend structural fires we spent a bit of time discussing this area. Meth labs would be the the worst as you don't know they are there until they go up with a rather large explosion.

The other charming thing is that these lovely people are now setting man traps to protect their drugs designed to injure and maim. these can include shotguns at knee height as well as boards on springs full of nails aimed at the thighs. It was certainly an eye opener as prior to this I thought it was the stuff you would see in the movies.

its just sad really, i mean i dont care if people have 1 in the garden or the shed for themselves, all the best to them but when you are just doing it for the money thats where i dont like it.

as for the labs, you can only hope they set their own trap off in the right spot so they cant reproduce, we dont need any more of those types.
makes you feel sorry for the people that go in there to try to help and end up getting maimed or killed in the process.

although its not so much the people growing the drugs that worry me, its the desperate ones trying to steal them that come through our yard, those are the really scary ones.

the smoke was pure electrical/plastic/pvc couldnt smell the pot at all.
i was running around in it for about 20 minutes trying to find the source, by the time i knew where it was coming from i felt terribly sick so it definately wasnt what youd first expect with that type of fire.

watching the news tonight i see they also raided another house 2 streets over and found a lab setup that was linked to one of the motorcycle clubs, seems they pick the quieter suburbs...
