M83 with QHY8 Updated with compiled image

A single 15 minute image of M83 trying to beat the moon.
Fairly happy with the results. I am shooting some more frames as I type.

Running the camera with a 50% reduction in cooling air over the back of the camera and so far no ice forming on the CCD. Outsideair temp about 5 degrees C.

Hope you enjoy.

Geez Doug, That's a ripper with plenty of detail for a single shot.

Cheers Daniel.

That's the way Doug. Go deep mate. Shoot some 20 or 30 min subs if you can. I think I've mentioned this before, but the S/N ratio of a CCD image increases linearly with the square root of the exposure time. This means that quadrupling the exposure time doubles the S/N ratio. So take the longest effective exposure you can. Look forward to seeing the final rendition.

I like that Doug, it is very close to what I saw with the 18" scope the other night (at high magnification of course)
I personally like shots that show what you can see through a scope

Hi Doug,

Thats a nice shot of M83, more subs = more data = more detail so i will be interested to see what you get when you stack the rest.

"Ice on the CCD"
Doug - you've changed!!!

Just kidding mate - very nice pic.
Was it done through an ED80?
With that kind of CCD imaging capability - you want to get in close!!!

All the best and more please!!!!

Doug

Hi Doug, Shot with the Tak FS102. Get in close. I couldn't afford the new scope after the divorce. She would kill me.

got lots of potential for the finished image when you add them together.

Re Ice..... i had an issue the other day, see pic... it was suggested i clean the chip with some metho as it may have oil or contaminants on it which helps the ice form (did it and it seems to have helped).

Reducing the airflow will raise the temp and you should be better off too. Keep em coming.... when you put up the final use the whole 200kb as you will get less jpg artifacts

cheers clive

M83 combined 6 X 15 min

Full combined image of 6 X 15 minute exposures. Original cropped by about 50% to enlarge the galaxy.

I still need more data and probably longer exposures. Maybe when the moon departs.

Thanks Guys for all the comments.

Great image Doug, I love the detail in those spiral arms.
You're getting good results from the QHY8. What gain/offset were you using?

Cheers,

Rob

Hi Rob gain of 12% and offset of 118 using Nebulosity as a capture program. Processed with IP3 and photoshop CS2.

I am starting to get the hang of the processing. It is definitely a black art and can make or break an image.
SOOOOOO MUCH TO LEARN.

Thanks Doug, I'll give those settings a try.
Processing is the final important step after we master polar alignment, focus, guiding and exposure. Gotta get them all right before we get the image we want! A lot to learn indeed!

Cheers,

Rob
