Highest on the mainland, but technically it's not Australia's highest peak. Mt McClintock, in Australian Antarctic Territory stands at 3490metres in height and is the highest peak. Big Ben, on Heard Island, is our highest and only active volcano, at 2745metres. A former lecturer of mine, and three time Antarctic explorer, Prof. Jon Stevenson, has been to the island a number of times.
I've heard some good stories from him about walking over the top of crevasses and such, with only a small covering of ice/snow between the team and disaster
