Second highest Mountain in OZ

Everyone knows Mt Kosciozko is Australia's highest peak.

Not so well known is the second highest.

It's Mt Jagungal and it's located 35kms north of Kosci in the remote part of the Kosciozko National Park. It's spectacular scenery and I bet there is snow up there today!

Mt Jagungal and area have some of the best walking.
Our club, The Victorian Mountain Tramping Club (VMTC), walk and ski there regularly. Pity it is so far from Melbourne.

Highest on the mainland, but technically it's not Australia's highest peak. Mt McClintock, in Australian Antarctic Territory stands at 3490metres in height and is the highest peak. Big Ben, on Heard Island, is our highest and only active volcano, at 2745metres. A former lecturer of mine, and three time Antarctic explorer, Prof. Jon Stevenson, has been to the island a number of times.

I've heard some good stories from him about walking over the top of crevasses and such, with only a small covering of ice/snow between the team and disaster

Beautiful Shots, you would be right there would be a bit of snow up there now although a lot has melted since yesterday. See webcams:

One area I would like to see is the escarpment that drops away from Kosciuszko to the west, apparently its quite impressive.

Top pics.......noted on the link the visit to the area was for Everest training, is that for climbing within the Everest region or the actual mountain itself ?

Doug - interesting stuff! I think I must have been reading an old guidebook, and I must admit I am dissapointed in myself in not picking up that error having visited Mt Twynam for the last 5 years straight!

Beren - yep, depending on fitness level and finances could be attempting Everest North side next year. Looking forward to seeing how dark the sky will be in Tibet.
