Seagull Nebula and Thors Helmet

Hi
Over the weekend I put on my 50mm f1.8 lens and did a widefield after noting I could fit in Thors Helmet and the Seagull neb.
Thors helmet is the fuzzy blob under and a little to the right of the Seagull.

9x300 secs ISO400, UV/IR and Baader UHC-S filters, modded 350D, 50mm stopped down to f3.5
Full size version here

You may note some purple and other strange coloured stars in the full size image. The stars with the 50mm lens are so sharply focused they dont fall on all 3 coloured pixels. EG if a faint white star falls on just a red pixel, it will appear red, if on a green pixel, green and so on, or if it gets just a red and adjacent blue pixel, it will appear purple, as we see here. Also an odd series of reflections from the bright star, I had the two 2 inch filters just sitting on top of a UV cover filter on the lens

I didnt know that area was so rich in stars till I took the pic.
Scott

Phew... with images like yours, who needs a telescope!

I just spent half an hour looking at it and trying to work out which objects I can see, looks like you have covered a good part of the NGC catalogue here, and thrown in the Rosette neb for free (amongst many others).

A truly impressive image

Yep Scott that sure is a beauty, I have forgotten how it all looks through a 50mm lens, must try that again some time.
