some frogs, birds, and bugs, an exercise in macro!
hey guys, i was down at my parents place this weekend, and managed to grab a few decent shots. please note, these are all FULL FRAME shots.
the first two are the same dragon fly, he was good enough to sit still for me to grab a dozen macro attempts of his head. funny thing was, this blue dragon fly, was EATING a red dragon fly, as illustrated by the second photo. taken with the 50mm prime reversed on the 28-90mm lens on the 400D
the third is, of course, of a frog looking all-too-comfortable in the hand hold of an old wooden crate.
the fourth is of a scaly-breasted Lorikeet on a bird feeder. i mananged to get within arm's reach of this little guy.
the fifth is a macro of a red dragon fly. he sat sat so still for so long. i easily managed two dozen shots of this guy. taken with the 50mm prime reversed on the 28-90mm lens on the 400D
the sixth is of a galah that had just landed. taken through the ED80 with the Canon 350D.
GOOD ONYA Josh !! ..I bet you were a handful for your parents when y'was a lil'un!! ....and they obviously gave you every encouragement and support!!
I love your enthusiasm!! ..and you're really mastering that depth-of-field! ...that first one looks rather like what I see if I dare confront the mirror just after I wake...
What a wonderful portfolio! The photos have a very intimate feel and lovely quality about them, as if the viewer is right there with the creature, rather than being relegated to a distant, detached observer.
Josh - I really like the shots
Pardon my lack of knowledge but how do you 'reverse' a 50mm prime on the 28-90, does this turn it to a macro type lens - can you post apic - as I really love macro pics - but don't have the cash for the expensive macro lens, but can buy older style primes at pretty reasonable prices - I don't care they don't auto focus
cheers daniel
yup, i'll have to borrow my housemates camera, tomorrow afternoon cause they've gone to bed already, but basically, to reverse a lense you need a male to male filter thread adapter. for instance i have a Canon 50mm prime lens (f1.8) which has a 52mm filter thread. and i have my Canon 28-90mm (f4-5.6) lens which has a 58mm filter thread. so to reverse my 50mm onto the 28-90mm, i need a step up adapter which step the filter thread size on my 50mm prime from 52mm to 58mm, then i have a 58mm-58mm male to male adapter which joins the two lens' together. so i have the back end of my 50mm prime pointing at my subject. my focal plane is about 15-20mm from the glass, which can be a bit disconcerting. all in all it cost me about $20 to get the adapters off ebay. and shipped to my door.
i'll post a pick tomorrow night after work, so tune in then!
