More semi-macro photos

Hello,

Whilst the clouds continue to thwart our astronomical activities, at least we can get out into our local forest, Toohey Forest and try to find some of nature’s little marvels on which to hone our photo skills.

In the forest, the critters tend to move and the breeze plays havoc with the foliage, making the subjects sway if they haven’t already scarpered! By the time I get the tripod out, adjusted, camera attached, etc. I’m usually left with a nice view of ahem, an empty twig or leaf!

1 & 2 are of a poor, wrecked butterfly (head and wing detail) that my wife brought inside to warm up.
3 & 4 are a moth emerging from its cocoon – love the golden wing!
5 & 6 were all I managed to grab before the insects (grasshopper & butterfly) jumped or flew off!
7 & 8 is of a goanna climbing a tree.

All photos taken with Canon 40D and either 70-200 F4 L or 60mm F2.8 macro.

Nice work Dennis

I really like the capture of the Northern Ringlet Butterfly - haven't seen one of those in my backyard yet.

I fully appreciate the issues with breeze and flighty critters ... I feel your pain. Most of my bug shots come from a small part of our garden where I park myself for a while. It is after a while that you realise just how much is going on

The Goanna is super sharp - gotta love the 70-200 F4

Thanks Barb & Dave. The Goanna looked quite nonchalant as I was snapping away. The skin looked incredibly clean and somehow fresh – I’m not sure if Goannas shed their skins, but if they do, I reckon it must have just happened as the markings are just so distinct and quite beautiful.
