CCD KILLER! ETA Carina

Ok, i'm going to get flamed or have started a war between CCD's and DSLR's LOL. It seems i always come across websites labeling their CCD products as a "DSLR Killer!" so heres one back

Ofcourse no offense intended to all CCD owners as i can only dream to get myself an SBIG/Starlight/FLI camera! Personally speaking, I still do love and own the meade DSI!

13 x 7 minutes at ISO 400.

Great image Eric once again, how is it you can take run of the mill images, while i have been banned, and have to go for the deep stuff.

very nice indeed.

This irritates the crap out of me Eric. You do stuff with a DSLR (and in JPEG, you have to be KIDDING) thats just should be ILLEGAL. Your statement "CCD killer" assumes a given image comparison of an Astrocam and a DSLR image by the same average imager to illustrate what can be done with a given average skill set. In this case, a DSLR pic may well look similar to an Astrocam. You have only presented DSLR pics to demonstrate your skill. A fairer comparison would be YOU presenting a DSLR pic AND a 16meg US$16K cam pic, side by side. Then, you would see the difference. For a start, DSLR JEGS are 8 bit, and Astrocams are 16bit, that alone would, if you applied the skills you have, produce a spine chilling result, I dread the day .

BTW, as Mike says, try RAW (at least 12 bit), I await with intrepidation at the result.

Thanksss Fred for your compliments. I won't name any names, but have always seen websites labeling their CCD products "KILLS" DSLR . For them to say that is like comparing a datsun to a ferrari. im mere just rubbing it in their face that not all DSLR images gets "KILLED" by CCD's.

We're on the verge of a Wardian argument regarding CCD v's DSLRs here!
Eric, in an attempt to transcend all that nonsense let me say your image is very very smooth. It shows all up and coming imagers just what can be achieved with what is perceived to be budget gear.
CCD killer or not(pretty close though), mate - you're an inspiration!
Well done again
Doug

Another great image Eric. Any camera in your hands seems to produce lethal images.

Great Shot Eric.

I now need to wait a few months (or more), before attempting to get an image together for public critique with that camera of yours.

Excellent image. I thought the subs were shot in raw, so they can be properly dark subtracted and flat fielded?

90 mins is nice and deep for the eta carina neb too

A classic image Eric, well done. I'm with Fred. Its a bold statement to make until the same astrophotographer targets the same region with two different cameras, but all other components in the imaging train remains the same. Peter Ward did this conclusive test not long ago - http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/s...ad.php?t=28834

The output you and various other DSLR users are producing is incredible. The one shot colour camera be it DSLR or CCD certainly allows for high volume work. A few images a week is not a problem and this is a fun form of imaging. I wont be swapping my mono chip with filters for a DSLR any time soon despite the considerably higher workload and challenges it takes to produce an image.

Cheers

It was inconclusive Jase! Crap in crap out!

Oh I forgot I do not understand the Physics. So just disregard my post!

Just google my name and you will see the small number of papers I am an author on.

try 'A. Van donkelaar' or 'Albert Van Donkelaar'. See if you guys even start to understand the introductions.

Sorry

Bert
