OMG – another Omega, better late than never!

Hello,

At the risk of saturating IIS with this wonderful celestial powerhouse of stars, here is Omega Centauri as seen through the eye of the Tak Mewlon 180 F12 with the x0.8 Reducer/Flattener bringing it down to F9.6. The saturation of the stars has been increased slightly, resulting in the enhanced blues and yellows.

In this instance, the eye was the unmodded Canon 40D, with 5 x 180 second exposures at 400 ASA captured on 8th February 2008. This colour enhanced image is a 1024x768 crop from the full frame.

Please don’t delete yours – I had an ahem, slight equipment advantage over you:

• 180mm aperture
• FL of 1730mm
• 5x180 sec exposures

Actually, I turned to ‘ol faithful with my confidence shattered after trying for M83 with a 5 minute exposure and not recording much!

Nice shot there. Always wondered how a DSLR would go on a high end scope like that, quite well it seems.

Thank you Stuart, Barb & Dave and Scott for those nice comments – I was somewhat deflated when I took this image set as I had just failed miserably on M83! But, when I saw the centre of Omega loom up on the screen my mood was instantly transformed to one of elation! But, at 3:30am there was no one around to share it with!

Scott, the Mewlon 180 is indeed a fine ‘scope, but I am still struggling to come to terms with its special requirements.

For my SBIG ST7 and CFW8A I had to order a special Tak adapter ($100 US! ) to ensure the correct distance between chip and primary mirror and for the Canon 40D, I’m sure there is another adapter but I haven’t hunted it down yet, nor approached my incredibly understanding wife, to ask for another $100 US to spend on a piece of metal with a T thread and a 54mm thread!

However, please don’t get me wrong – I am not complaining, it is a stunning instrument on doubles and clusters.

Stars are nice and tight for a relatively long FL, colour looks good and some good resolution there too, nice one
