There's this new Astro lodge that has hit my radar. It's outside of
San Pedro de Atacama, Chile at 8,000 ft. in the Andes.

"The lodges are owned by Alain and Alejandra Maury.
Alain used to work in professional observatories,
first as a photographic scientist (worked at the
Schmidt telescope of the Observatoire de la Côte d'Azur
in France, was photographic scientist at Palomar Observatory
between 1984 and 1988 for the second Palomar Observatory
Sky Survey), then as an instrument scientist, working on
CCD cameras, and telescope software at the Schmidt
telescope in OCA....."

So after working with the BIG BOYS Alain could not stand the thought
of going back to his light polluted home in France! So he opened an
Astro lodge:
"We actually have four lodges, grouped by two. There are two "small"
lodges, which contain each a room with double bed, a kitchen and a
bathroom. There is a patio between the two lodges, from where you
have a direct view on the Andes."

When i think of building my next observatory in the southern
hemisphere, this place has allot of the "feel" that i would
want. Of course it needs a secure observatory but in general
i really like the start that Alain and his wife have made.
i've loved Alain's Andean compound so much! It makes my head spin
to see what he has up there so far. Alain is even going bigger:
A quote from his web site: "Alain continues slowly but surely to
observe the sky, he is now installing a 92cm telescope (36 inch)
in order to continue his solar system investigations."
