Eyepiece Core Set

Would be grateful of some advice on a Core set of Celestron eyepieces not counting the one that comes with the Scope plus a nice Barlow for a 12" Starhopper Dobsonian with the 2" focuser.

From reading some of your other posts I believe that this is your first telescope...I am going to assume so for the sake of my reply. Apologies if this is incorrect.

Many telescopes that you can buy (particularly the "package" Dobsonians) come with some eyepieces in the purchase package (some 2 some 3 some even 4). Generally speaking, at least two of them are of "decent" quality and are usuable.

Regardless, I will give you the same advice that I almost always give...before you go out and buy any more eyepieces, use what you have for a while. Once you have some viewing time under you belt then and only then think about buying more.

There are many many different types and price ranges for eyepieces and until you understand your likes/dislikes and budget it is nearly impossible (and probably foolish) to offer many suggestions to you that will be meaningful.

Of course, I could jump in and name some Televue or Pentax products at a price that might rival that of your scope that are wonderful pieces of glass but again, depending on how you use your gear and the things you want to see and your budget, any suggestion could be wrong and inappropriate.

Use what you have for a while and try and get together with people in a nearby astro society/club or even folks from this site. Share views with their gear...compare and contrast it to yours...Get a feel for the night sky, what you enjoy looking at and what you don't...figure out what you like about your current gear and what you would change. Mopst importantly decide how important this hobby is going to be to you. If you are only going to use your gear 6 times a year, the level of investment I'd recommend is much different that if you are going to use it nightly!

If your chosen telescope package does not include eyepieces, I might suggest that you shop around a bit...many beginning scopes include them. If you have had some experience at the eyepeice then outline your likes and dislikes and then we might be able to give you some reasonable suggestions.

I'd also recommend a visit to the Televue website...they have some articles that outline thier thoughts on which eyepeices to start with.

Personally I really love the wide angle Vixen's (LVW) which are top class - probably just below the Televue or Nagler, high end Pantax range - but significantly cheaper.

Experience

I used to buy really high power Plossol eye-pieces, then went to ED's - but all these were blown away by Vixen LWV - and instead I went real low magnification for wide field of view - and were delighted by them. Five times the cost of a cheapy - 20 times the pleasure and performance!

I've been looking at the Vixen's for a while now, mainly because of the good things I keep hearing/reading about them (LVW's & LV's) and secondly, because the price of Televue and Pentax eyepieces is way out of my buget now and likely for many years to come.
