Not much astronomy this summer-La Ninas here

Ive always thought its been far too cloudy of late, now my worst fears confirmed

http://www.news.com.au/story/0,23599...74-421,00.html

La Nina's here, might be our wettest summer for decades. Think I will forget about imaging Orion and other summer stuff this season

I think your right Scott. I've had only one clear night in nearly 2 months.

Might be the time to stock up on astro goodys seeing as the cloud is here anyway.

Cheers

Those with permanent mounts are going to have a significant advantage over the rest of us if this is the case.

I wouldn't write off the summer just yet - the SOI is about neutral.

If it is a la Nina it is a very weak one. Not that we couldn't use a lot more rain.

The obvious solution is to take up night time cloud imaging...then you will get frustrated with too many cloudless nights!

Yep, spending time moving into the observatory, maintenance, repairs, improvements, general tinkering...

And if a clear night comes along, maybe some imaging as well :-)

cheers, Bird

I don't think I have had one clear night since the Nov Snake valley camp.

Saturday night was pretty good just north of Melbourne. No cloud, transparency good, seeing fair. Just a bit of wind pickup as the Moon rose. Had a great time hitting plenty of targets including Uranus for the first time! I don't know what you guys are complaining about!

Know the feeling!

Set the LX90 up last night when it was dark enough to see some stars. Got a quick look at Andromeda, Orion, 47 Tuc and the Tarantula. Within ten minutes about a third of the sky was clouds.

Lately I suppose I should be thankful for small mercies.

Anyone for origami and macrame?

Mark.

It was actually fairly clear last night on the Central Coast.. actually, beautifully clear around 1:30am.

I was going to setup for some deep-space imaging around 9pm, but was too tired to drift align and instead, setup the 12" for planetary imaging.

Got up at 1:30am to image Mars, and after seeing how poor the seeing was and yet how nice and dark the sky was, I wished I'd gone with the ED80!

Melbourne looked much the same this morning on our radar - some heavy downpours, including here at Bundoora in the Northern suburbs. Sky lightening towards the west at present. A lovely drop!

It was crystal clear for another week after Camp, then we had 2 cloudy nights and then clear again. We have only had about 5 cloudy nights since Camp.

It's been very cloudy here for a month or so before I went to Canada, and it was certainly cloudy there!

It's been so long since I've had my scope out, I'm starting to feel guilty about it. Murphy has had a fair grip on me lately a well though... the only time it's been anywhere near clear I've been committed to something else....

As much as I'd love some nice steady, clear summer nights I really do appreciate the rain! We just need to get it organised.... rain = day, clear = night. Wouldn't that be great!

Al.

Wet and cloudy over this way, haven't had a decent night for weeks. Given me time to build the voltage regulator for the scope drives and sort out a few things in the shed and garden. The vegie garden is loving it so there are compensations

Yep. Was doing an interview with weather folk the other day and the general consensus was La Nina is here, although there was some difference of opinion in its strength.

Looks like it will be wetter this summer/autumn than it has been for quite a while.
