Options for Deep Space Imaging

I would like to get into imaging both Solar System and Deep Space. I currently have a 8" newt and have been considering my options.
I have been thinking about an EQ6 with ED80 but every interest rate rise makes me think less and less about this option

I noticed on another thread Middy was taking deep space images using a barndoor which made me think the DSI might be possible with a EQ platform.

Is this possible? I know I could do Planetary imaging with a EQ platform but can Deep Space be achieved with this set-up.

I don't think the Dob EQ platforms (is that what you are referring to?) track accurately enough for anything bar very short focal length DSO shots - camera lenses really.... I also think that for the price of a decent platform you can buy a GEM anyway.....

You could probably get away with an EQ5, and maybe a more compact 80mm apo (like those new WO style ones coming out) or a good telephoto lens.

If you where going to buy an EQ6 with the ed80 your probably better off with just the EQ6 and use your 8" reflector, I guessing it's a Dob.

I have a 10" dob and an eq6 pro all I do is remove the ota from the dob mount and put it in the 10" tube rings and thats it, admittedly you will have to 2 big bits on the side of your tube (where the handles screw in and it sits in the dob mount) this makes the tube unable to rotate all the way around but I've never really had too much of a problem with this, only the odd balance issue but I seemed to have got it right now.

plus later on you can always get the ed 80 as a guide scope.
