Three Weddings and a Funeral

I want to tell you about a tale of three astronomers and a Carbon Fibre tube.

The story has 3 heroes and 1 villain.

The cast of characters:

Gary Beal - my friend and mentor, hero - he started all this
Dennis Simmons - an unsung hero
Greg Barlow - an unsung superhero
Myself - (almost) innocent bystander

I'm not sure who the villain is yet!

Gary started all this by offering me the Carbon Fibre tube from his 10" Newtonian, the only problem is that he and the tube are co-located in NZ whilst I'm in Bathurst NSW.

After discarding numerous schemes involving acts of surgery on the tube, we decided that the best course of action would be to ship the tube in one piece. I just found the villain; TNT they wanted to charge an astronomical price (pardon the pun) for shipment and Gary being the cunning fellow he is devised an exceedingly clever plan - we would ship the tube across the Tasman using some poor unsuspecting person to take the tube on board a flight as "luggage".

As luck would have it an old mate of Gary's (Greg Barlow) volunteered to be the brave soul who would attempt the feat. Trouble is Greg was flying to Brisbane which is not real close to Bathurst.

Gary suggested that we should ask the IIS community for help. Yesterday I put up a new thread asking for help and to my utter amazement, I got a reply.

End Part 1 - I've got to go and cook dinner. back in an hour or so.

Cunning......not Gary.... I've known he was cunning for a long time .....I mean leaving those who know part of the story hanging while you go and do something meaningless. Keep us hanging why dont you

I hope you never start to write sci-fantasy novels

Hey Lee

You are amazingly psychic! A film crew from Channel 7 were at the Brisbane International Airport filming a segment for “Border Security” when I met up with Gary’s friend, Greg, this morning!

Alison Dubois has nothing on you!

Cheers

Dennis

I hope this doesn't end up like the wheel of time novels.......11 books and the author, Robert Jordon, died. (this was a massive blow to the sci-fi, fantasy genre) The series was no where near finished.....well I don't think so, i'm only up to book 6.

Part 2

Ok before we get started on part 2 let me answer the previous posts.

Yes I am going to be writing science fiction some time in the future, perhaps in the far future, but none of that fantasy stuff.

No I didn't arrange for Border patrol to be present but I'm currently negotiating transmission rights with channel 7 (or is that 9)

Yes Gary is as clever as everybody makes out

So picking the story up from where we left off in part 1

"The Reply"

Blown away as I was, the reply from Dennis came out of the blue. Not only was Dennis going to go to the meet the flight at the airport (6:45am in the morning mind you), he was also willing to make sure that TNT could pickup up the tube and trans-ship (thats not like teleporting) it to me. I felt confused and elated all at the same time. Information provided to me by unusually reliably sources indicated that Dennis was every bit the super hero suggested by his posting.

Buoyed by these developments Gary and I decided to take the plunge and commit to finishing the mission. Quick checks with customs, TNT and other parties which I cant reveal suggested that Greg would be the perfect courier. Now all we had to do was to ensure that his arrival at 4:30am (again in the morning) at the airport with a 1.3m 30cm diameter tube would arouse no suspicion. We also had to make sure that our connection at the Brisbane end was fully clued in.

Our extensive experience in scheming paid off here and very soon all the elements were in place. Emails from Gary confirmed that Greg had indeed been able to get the tube onboard and was safely ensconced sipping champagne and eating strawberries.

Dennis in the meantime was preparing for the Brisbane end of the mission arriving at Brisbane airport before 6am. By this time a swarm of emails had crossed the Tasman confirming every aspect of the mission status.

That ends part 2 Stay tuned - desert coming up

Part III

Ok I confess there is no part 3.

Here's how the story pans out:

Dennis met Greg at the airport and got the tube, with no federal entanglements. Incredibly it arrived undamaged; Gary's packing was as usual - over the top.

After ensuring that Greg got to where he had to go, Dennis dropped the tube off at TNT who hopefully wont stuff it up too badly.

I just wanted to publicly find a way to thank:

Gary, Greg and especially Dennis for their selflessness in getting the C/F tube and I to the same location. I'm not quite sure how I can completely express my thanks but rest assured - I'm going to be working on.

Well done guys and thanks, I award each of you my astro super hero award for the month of November, December ....

Folks, it just dosn't get better than that

Regards and Thanks

Lars

Isn't that what IIS is all about, a bit here, a bit there? Like someone said, what goes around comes around.
Hope TNT doesn't let the side down. Stay tuned.

Tuesday, 6:00am, yawn. Arriving at the Brisbane International terminal I eschewed my morning cuppa for a mug-a-chino and a tasty Apricot Danish Pastry whilst surveilling the frenetic pace of life all around me as the Airport burst into life. With me, I had a nicely printed A4 sign, announcing that I was meeting a “Greg Barlow” although I didn’t really expect to have to use it. I mean, after all, how difficult could it be to miss a complete stranger carrying a 1.3 metre long x 300mm diameter CF tube, exiting the Customs Area? And a Kiwi at that.

A film crew from Channel 7 turned up, ready to film a segment of “Border Security”. I mused, should I give them the inside dirt on Greg and say watch out for a bloke carrying a huge cannon? Common sense prevailed, plus I didn’t want to upset Au/NZ international relationships, nor Gary, so I just plonked myself down in the comfy seats and watched airport life zip by.

Anyhow, Greg arrived and was, as expected, unmissable. We met and greeted and I picked up the incredibly light and professionally wrapped (Gary Beal) tube and we made our way to the car. I asked Greg where his immediate destination was and it turned out to be Redcliffe, some 25kms north, so I offered him a lift. I think Greg was a little taken aback by the offer, especially when he also realised that I had never met either Gary or Lars, other than through IceInSpace! However, it was an easy decision – the traffic into Brisbane stretched right back to the end of the Galaxy whereas the northern 30 minute run to Redcliffe was moving nicely. It was great to hear about life in New Zealand and get some of the dirt on Gary!

Having dropped Greg off at his Mum’s (Happy 80th Birthday to Mum ), I headed back to BrisVegas via the scenic coastal route. Later that day I had a dental appointment only some 10 mins from the TNT Depot so I dropped off the CF Tube for Lars and sent him a scanned copy of the Con Note for proof of despatch, along with a photo showing the excellent condition of the tube and packaging…just in case!

Anyhow, the tube arrived safe and sound today, mission accomplished, and Lars has generously shouted me a 12 months subscription to Australian Sky & Telescope – woohoo, thanks Lars. Can’t wait to see 1st light from the new ‘scope.

Cheers

Dennis

I am almost in tears - what a happy story.... but to make it more exciting you should have tipped off customs that it was a portable missile launcher. That way you could have written about guns – the swat teams and helicopters, beagle dogs looking for imported NZ happy dust being met by a secret agent!!!! Maybe even a car chase with James “Dennis” bond giving the highway patrol the slip in his Aston “Subaru” martin…..with missile launchers and ejector seat.

Fair dinkum you guys are worth a million – Lars well done and look forward to the scope’s development
