Astronomers get new title!

The High School I did two Astronomy sessions at today gave us a new title!

I was introduced to each class by the Science Teacher as an 'Amateur Astronomiser' from the 'Snake Valley Astronomiser Club'!

So we have been promoted in title from 'Astronomers' to 'Astronomisers'

Hmmmm, 'Astronomiser' sounds more important

Or sounds like an Aerosol product

Astronomiser: One who studies the heavenly bodies and is also very economical with their household budget.. (?)
Being a teacher, I am trying to think of a way to defend or offer some explanation for my colleague, but I am struggling!!!!

Keep Struggling, coz he also said that if they hold a BBQ after school next week would I bring the scopes so the kids could see the objects I spoke about and showed them.

I said, it's daylight savings now and that would make it harder to keep the kids back late. He said "Why, what's wrong with about 5pm, that's not late?"

I said coz it won't be starting to get dark until about 7pm.

He said (this will crack you up) "How are we going to see in the Dark?"

Our kids are in their hands

Fortunately the other Science teacher took him aside and spoke to him

I don't think that there is anything that I can say that can make this look or sound any better!!!!
I hope - for the kids sake - that he is on a steep learning curve!!!

In a similar vein, work colleagues often used to say, “you must have had a great night last night, as it was so clear and the Moon was full – lots to see”!

Some time ago during a learn to sail class at our sailing club I was discussing a Bass Strait crossing with the when one of the participants (a very senior Telstra executive, no less) asked quite seriously where we parked (sic) the boat at night.

Yep..as soon as someone know what my hobby is they hold out their mitt and tell me their birthdate!!!..I very discreetly correct them..then I go somewhere and scream!!!..LOL

I'm sure there are a few wives out there that are used to a husbands fingers in the bank account that wish they (the husbands) were Astronomisers.

You mean to say thay actually have schools nowadays?

Could have fooled me with the lack of lliteracy that is shown these days by our "future generation" Albeit not confined to students, but also lecturers at universities who don't even know what they are teaching, according to my son doing his BSc degree in computer programming

Seriously though it is sad to see corruption of the English language, especially when the creators have no knowledge of the etymology of the word they have created.

But then I am entitled to be a GOM as I hit the big 72 tomorrow. Thanks for Birthday wishes.

Funny thing Ric is that I've been telling people for ages that I'm off to do some "astronomercising" - lugging a 12" dob around is a combination of astronomy and exercise, albeit it a brief one.
