Ok so I've been putting this one into the tooooo hard basket. I couldn't get the colour and gradients right, couldn't get the curves and levels right. But today I was bored and thought why not give it another go. Still not very happy with it but at least if I post it I will stop playing with it. It's done for the season now. I can move onto other things

It's a little bit like wet concrete; if you keep playing with it sooner or later you are going to really stuff it up

5/240sec @ f/2.8 135mm L @ ISO800. Dark subtracted and processed in IP. Finishing off with curves, levels and all sorts of other "stuff" in PS. The exposure was way too long for M42 but it did bring out the Horsie. Next time I might try a HDR like Bert.

The Horse and Flame are nice and clear as you say, L series lenses are great ay !

Just noticed, is that M78 you've captured in the bottom left corner as well ?

Looks like a image could do with some layering to manage the dynamic range. Of course you could cheat by cropping each object, DDP them and bring them back into the wide star field using masks. Depends on how much effort you want to go to.

Nice work there, its a touch task to show M42 and the Horsehead together as one is so bright the other faint.

A lovely FOV of this area at 135mm !!
There's nice detail in the horsey/flame.

You can always come back to this one on a rainy day and mask the neb area.

Thanks Col. The diffraction spikes are caused by the vanes that close down the aperture in the lens.

thats very interesting paul , wondered if i could get the same effect imaging through a newtonian , can get 4 spikes but more would be nice

If you string some fine wire across the opening at 45deg to each of your vanes you should get 8 spikes.
