Bad Astronomy Nightmare

I was just outside watching full Moon rise with my son and suddenly I remembered the Nightmare I had last night.

In the dream I was trying to see the very thin Crescent Moon with my Binoculars.

Already, those in the know, now where the thin crescent Moon is. Right near the Sun!

Well, in last nights dream as I was trying to get the crescent, I was moving the Binoculars around in the area and all of a sudden I saw a brilliant flash and it felt like I got hit in the left eye by a Mack Truck!

Pain! Fear! Sickness in the guts!

I knew instantly that I had just gone blind in the left eye, and immediately awoke in fear!!!!!!

It was so real that even after waking, I felt that I went into shock for a few minutes.

As soon as I realised it was a dream, I tested both my eyes. Yep, all working.

As I was shaking from shock, facts started coming to mind: If I was using Binocs, both eyes would have been fried. Also, they say that you can't feel it when you burn your retinas.

Regardless, it was so real, and scared the wits out of me.

I would hate to have it happen for real!!!

Dreams can be very convincing!

Though not a nightmare I did have similar concerns when looking for Comet McNaught during the day. I was very particular about making sure the eaves of the house were between me and the sun, but still with bino's looking toward the sun during the day, got the heebie-jeebies going through my mind!

most likely has a different meaning to the obvious. Maybe has nothing to do with the sun, maybe has nothing to do with blindness. Are you hiding something? are you keeping something tucked away inside. Are you afraid of going to sleep and not waking up, could be one of a thousand meanings. Look between the lines and the not so obvious may just be starring you in the face.

Andrew, I don't believe in dreams coming true, or giving messages.

I did go to bed annoyed about the Full Moon though. Must have been playing on my mind

Hey dreams only come true if you make them come true. Not saying that at all, Full moon does have that effect on some Astronomers though LOL

Very nearly did it during the transit of Venus..two scopes one filter, swapping them from one scope to the other..getting stressed cause things were going wrong..very close to looking thru the scope without the filter..
Would you be blinded instantly??? I often wondered after that close call.

I believe that some dreams have a deeper meanings.
When I was living in Brisbane, nearly every night I would dream that I could fly, and I would travel to many places that I knew. But every time I took off, there would be power lines to dodge.
Once I moved to the country, I haven't had a flying dream since. ( worst luck as I enjoyed them, they were so real)
What I interpreted the dreams to mean was that I was unhappy living in town, too right I was, I wanted to move away, fly away. But I had to overcome obstacles, the powerlines, before I could move on.
Pretty obvious interpretation when you think about it.

But your dream....
You didn't watch RPA on telly last night did you? That could have made you dream about going blind in one eye.

No Jeanette, I watch Pay TV and it isn't on there.

I know that I was annoyed about the bright Moon last night. I went to bed thinking how I hate it.

Jeanette I had a dream that came true to the letter when I was a kid.

The day after I had it.

I dreamt I caught a budgie by throwing my jumper over it in the paddock on the way to school ... I told my mother, we used to go thru my dreams all the time..so she was a witness so to speak...I have never forgoten that..the only difference between the dream and the reality of the event was that in the dream it was a female bird..I dream in colour even though I am slightly colour blind..which sortta does not make sense... in the reality it was a male bird..the colour on their "nose" tells you their sex..blue for boys ...its body colour was the same however.

Can only be a coincidence and the dream programed the responce to throw my jumper over it...but in that instance a dream came true.

Thank good ness my other dreams dont come true... I have some weird ones..I dream even if I take a nap... in the dream days pass when I have been asleep for only half an hour..and fly yes I do that a lot.

A lot about losing things but given all the things I have lost I suppose that is reasonable.

It's the gods of the Full Moon Ken, they are playing with your mind for upsetting them.

Cheers

It wasn't astronomy related, but once I dreamt my old man got a job as
a parking meter, yes the actual parking meter lol. Fortunately that didn't
come true, he was a sea captain master 1 in the merchant navy.

Why do people hijack the threads I post in...

Back on topic .. if you make the mistake of looking at the Sun thru a scope is the blindness instant?

I expect the moment you looked the instinct would be to look away that instant ..in that instant would you be blinded.

I had a wild dream last night one of those blimps crashed due to a high wind but judging from the landscape it was in another Universe..one of those parallel ones to ours.

The instant blindness may be a good subject for Myth Busters

Alex,

I was told by another Amatuer Astronomer (I won't say who coz they didn't say I could quote them, if they want it known they will say), that his friend who is a seasoned Amatuer absent-mindedly looked at the sun thru a pair of Binoculars, and went instantly and permanently blind in both eyes.

So, Alex, I'd say the answer is yes, instantly.

I doubt it Alex. I was told about that chap nearly 2 years ago.

I think it was coz I was annoyed at the bright Moon.
