Thingy

Ok - we all have one in the shed - but what is the correct/ or your way, of spelling
"Thingymebob" or is it "Thingymabob" ?

of course, you all know what one of these is, don't you ?

might be one for you to answer Ving ?

Both are correct...
the first spelling is for things that belong to you... the second those borrowed from a neighbour.

I've always pronounced it like Thingamabob, but I like Alex's idea of attaching "original ownership" to the pronunciation.

Many things become truer the more you think at them.

Up here in Queensland we have doodads and occasionally for really complicated stuff with working parts , they are gismo's. Thingammyjigs would definitely refer to stuff borrowed from the neighbour and forgotten about. I am also the proud owner of a semi-automatic spade, and that is absolutely a gismo

Well done Ving, what a fascinating site. I think I learnt at least a dozen new words and improved my street cred.

Cheers
