The Lobster, Swan etc

Hi Guys,

I'm backishh . Just got my mount polar aligned at my new place. pointed at M17. retook my master darks, flats. Just a question to all modded DSLR users, how do you balance your colours for astro use? simply use AWB for astro use or you use CWB same settings as for terrestial use? im puzzled ever since i got the modded 300d. It has been set to AWB. Also, when using filters eg UV/IR + UHC-S, do you take flats/darks with or without them on? I'm kinda lost track forgot about some stuff.

Also finally got myself a LCD so i dont know how it looks . Feedbacks always welcome.

10 x 5 minutes at ISO800.

Cheers.

Very nice shot Eric.
I have always been impressed with your images and this one is another good one.
Also some questions from a noob - Did you take this image using a filter? Is so which type? Does using a filter change the way you process images? Any information will be greatly appreciated.

Nice image Eric! lovely contrast in the neb showing heaps of detail.
I always use CWB with my canon 300d but still have to color balance a bit till I am happy with it.
cheers

Hi Eric, I'm now viewing it with my LCD screen on my lappy and it still looks just as good as my CRT, a job well done.

Cheers

thanks ian. with nebulas, i always use the baader uv/ir + uhc-s filter. shootings galaxies i only just the uv/ir. good question re processing. with me, i dont really have steps processing images with or without filters. i dont find any big difference .

Great shot there, well composed too.

As I use Iris to process my images, after stacking etc, I fraw a small box over a dark area of sky witn no stars in the box, then use the "white" command, it neutralizes the sky background, in other words r g and b become equal. Then I stretch levels etc. As long as I first do this "white" command it makes colour balancing a lot easier. I leave the white balance as is (awb by default) as when I use Iris to debayer the images for initial dark subtraction etc, I dont think white balance is relevant as it uses the raw unprocessed image from the camera sensor to start with.

With my modded camera images shot thru the UHCS look pinkish unprocessed. However when debayered and processed, then "rebayered" in Iris they look greenish presumably as theers more green pixels then blue or red on the sensor and initially theres no white balancing

thanks for the info scott. what about your 350d camera settings? do you set it to AWB or CWB? If CWB, do you use a test pic taken with and or without your UHC-S/UV IR filters?

Cheers mate.
