Outer Filament

Hi All,

It has been ages since I've done any deep sky imaging. The weather has been rubbish and ruined recent plans to get out under darks skies, so some narrowband from the city has been the only option. At least the weather has finally started to improve here in Sydney.

This a filament on the southern edge of Eta Carina, which I've never imaged before except with lenses as even my ED80 can't fit it in with the rest of the nebula. Thanks to Andrew (Emuhead) and Mark (MarkinSpace) for the inspiration.

Telescope: Skywatcher MN190
Camera: ZWO 2600mc
Filter: Antlia ALP-T
Exposure 2 hours. Not nearly enough, particularly for the OIII which I've tried to maximise. If I get the chance, I wouldn't mind shooting RGB stars for this.

Lovely result on Carinas own Witch head Nebula

Pete,
Excellent image of the outer regions of Carina with your 2600MC
Some lovely wispy structures in and around that glorious star field
Well done !!

It’s damn hard work to pull out decent Oiii signal from a OSC and the Antlia ALPT under heavy light polluted skies, 2 hours is always going to struggle with that damn Bayer Matrix filter array acting like a signal blocker.

I imaged a similar region in Carina last year with my 2600MM and 3nm Antlia Ha , Oiii and Sii under my B8 skies and a big ol full moon up.

I could never achieve the same or similar result from my 2600MC and Antlia ALPT under a full moon. I found colour and colour balance in general is a bit washed out using the Dualband. I suppose an absolute boat load of hours ( +30 hours ) would help but we just don’t get enough clear nights in Sydney to gather that amount of data on one target.

Nice one Pete! I have captured this area many times using short focal length lenses but never locked into it as stand alone target. Great colours you've chosen and like Mike has said, this always reminded me of the Witch Head nebula in Orion. Just as impressive and much brighter, unlike the Witch Head"s reflection nebula.

Yes mono-narrowband is always going to be superior. In my case mono will have to wait until I can have a more permanent setup.

Nice images of a different part of EtaC! I've been guilty of overlooking just how many different (yet incredible) vistas this extended object shows us.
