Question about the central threaded rod of the LX90

When I screw the threaded central rod into the hole at the base of the telescope it feels really tight and I was wondering if applying some grease or other lubricant would help make it smoother. I've made sure the legs of the tripod are evenly spread.

Is it possible to cross-threads?

Cheers

The absolute most important thing you need to do is to ensure that the base is level.
Spreading the legs evenly is not the same thing as having the base level.
If the base is not level, you end up putting stress on the centre bolt and it will feel hard to turn and can cross thread.

I usually spread out the tripod legs and put a circular spirit bubble on the base. Then lock the legs in at their respective heights making sure the base is still level and then proceed to thread up the scope.

I use the same procedure and have never had a problem with the central rod thread. The only other thing that I do is lift the tripod up using the spreader bar and set it back down before I use the spirit level. A small amount of grease on the thread will help, I use a small amount on mine.

I lubricate the threads with teflon from a spray can. I spray the bolt threads, screw it into the base while still wet, then unscrew and let it dry - no sticky grease to make any mess.

Well I tried what Mick said (using the spreader bar) and it went in much more smoothly. I think I'll pop down the hardware store and pick up some grease.

I checked the thread at the bottom of the scope and can't see any crossing so no damage done and the thread on the central rod looks good as well.

Cheers for the help everyone.
