I remember riding in the back of the ute to the shops in the 60s. I also remember my uncle coming down to visit from Queensland and telling us he had to cover us over in his ute (6 kids but one got to ride in the cabin with him) and we had to lay down and shut up or he'd be booked. As a child I thought that was just insane.
My father rode motorbikes without helmets and used to double us as kids without helmets.
