Venus 10/5/23

Tracked down Venus late yesterday afternoon and luckily it's now setting into the trees as opposed to over my roof so the image is much more stable. She's approaching her 3rd quarter phase and looking marvellous!
Thought I'd try with the asi462mc without any filters to take advantage of IR sensitivity. Come out cleaner than my previous attempt (perhaps more the local seeing conditions than anything else). Still not any obvious surface detail revealed (or maybe just a hint of it perhaps if I squint)

asi462mc (UV/IR) 1ms / Gain37 / 5min capture ~25k frames

ASIAIR+

Thanks for looking!

That's a nice bit of work, I'm quite envious. Well done.

Dave,
Nice to see folk have a go at Venus
A mystical looking planet that offers little detail but has an aura about it
Well done !!
I had one attempt years ago with my DSLR and Newt and all I got was a glowing small blob
I leave it to you folk who have suitable planetary rigs

Cheers
Martin

Thanks Martin. As you say there’s not much detail unless you’re using special filters to pick up UV but I find it quite interesting with the changing phases. Unlike most astronomical targets its challenge is the high brightness so no real need for big aperture rigs for Venus. A good afternoon target while you wait for the night sky
