On Saturday night under a waxing gibbous moon, I captured these shots of an old railway bridge at Pyalong. I was hoping to utilise the moonlight to highlight the bridge but when I arrived, there were so many trees surrounding it that the bridge was in shadow. Only where there were a few gaps in the trees to allow the moonlight through did it shine on the bridge. I had no decent torch powerful enough to paint the large structure so these are the best I could do on the night. I used a modded canon 550d and a Samyang 14mm f2.8 which only starts to behave itself at f5.6 but works best at f8, which these were shot at. The moon washed out the Milky Way and didn't shine on the bridge but hey, I had a nice time anyway!
Cool subject- beautiful structure and nice framing. I’m sure you will revisit with intention on achieving what you originally set to do( if the conditions are right!)

Thanks JA, it was a nice place, quiet and peaceful. You could visualise an old steam train with smoke billowing from it's smoke stack, rattling over the bridge.

Thanks John, I'd like to find a flashlight with a light of around 4000k, most of the LEDs in torches these days are 5000k and higher, making a very bluish light. I guess I could either use an older tungsten filament globe torch or mask the bluish bridge and warm it up in post processing.
Nice going Michael, I really like the 1st one,, has a more balanced compositional framing of the trees, just my opinion.
The 2nd has quite a rosey tinge on the milk-way, maybe some colour adjustment needed there, but yeah A really cool location and enjoyable nights under a widefield shot are awesome,,, good stuff !

Thanks Bob. Yes, I agree with your comments. The first was taken earlier than the second one, when the moon was higher in the sky. I was using a modded DSLR, which has a tendency to cause a red hue. This needs to be corrected in post processing but in this case I probably didn't go far enough. I also think there is a 'moonset effect' as the moon descends into the earth''s murky atmosphere, turning the sky red, similar to a sunset.
