Laptop gets a black screen after logginh in

I have moved and I restarted my HP Spectre laptop for the first time in about 2 months. It goes to the log in screen with the nice landscape backdrop photo and once you log in the screen goes black. Tried a few things so far and no luck.

Any suggestions? It was working fine just a week ago. Perhaps a bad Windows update?

Greg.

Interesting. I also fired up a Surface Book 2 for the first time in a few weeks on Friday and it did the same thing. Turned out it was indeed a bad Windows update (according to the laptop, but I'm not so sure since I noticed a correlation between when it was on charge and when it wasn't). It took a few attempts to roll back.

If you have a recovery USB drive (easy to make if you don't), you can plug it in, access the BIOS during start-up (F2 or Del) and use the in-built recovery tools to fix any issues with Windows.

Thanks Adam.

I made the Windows Media Installation disc.

I ended up removing recent Windows Updates and that fixed it.
