Sun images from Melbourne 10 December 2022

After a great night with the planets we got up early as the forecast was clear. Unfortunately the jet stream was at 46m/s so the seeing conditions were pretty average. With so few sunny days in recent times, we still imaged as much as possible. Also it would be sad to miss such an active Sun.

We have over exposed the background in the inverted full disk images to highlight the enormous loop of plasma in the prom on the north west limb. There is yet another new active region following AR3162 which is now numbered (not surprisingly) AR3163.
The close up of AR3163 shows lots of surge proms as it is rounding the limb. The second closeup is of the departing region AR3153 which has put on a great show all week.
The white light images were taken with a 6" SCT, 2x barlow, ASI174MM & 540nm filter. The first image of AR3157, AR3161 & AR3156 shows a complex array of sun spots in AR3157. The second image of AR3153 shows interesting detail in the penumbra of the two larger spots.

Thanks John. Unfortunately the next umpteen days are looking pretty ordinary here.
