Testing Siril for stacking planetary images

We took the video from Monday morning's Mars image and re-processed it using Siril. Siril can do the stacking and the sharpening all in the one program. The only other work was done with GIMP which was just adding text. Siril has some advantages if it can be used for planetary as everything can be scripted therefore no manual intervention required and it has pixel maths. We have added the Siril image to the two original versions processed with AS!3 and Registax. We are reasonably happy with the result which looks comparable to our normal processing.

That’s really interesting. I’m assuming the workflow was a bit easier with Siril being an all-in-1 process? May I ask what is pixel math?

Hi David,

The workflow is actually a little more complicated and takes longer than AS!3 and Registax. However, once you have a workflow established you can write a script to automate it. It's just that we use Siril for DSO processing and it has a lot of extra features and capability that the other packages don't. In fact, we have seen Siril used for DSO, solar, lunar and planetary processing so it is quite versatile.

Pixel maths is where you can write mathematical functions that are applied a pixel at a time for a whole image like adding 2 images together. In addition to this, the functions can be conditional, like if the pixel value is above or below a certain value do one thing, else do something a different thing. It can be very powerful.

Thanks for that explanation. Seems like it may be a bit of a learning curve so might stick with the trusted as!3 & Regi6 for the time being…

That Registrax More image seems to have a little more discernible detail than the others, I think. Maybe it's the processing, maybe it's that I may need new glasses... However, it does look to have some features that the others don't. Coming along nicely in any case.

The Registax more image just has a higher level of wavelet sharpening than the "less" one. We agree that the "more" image is probably the best one. We have had far more experience processing planetary images with AS!3 & Registax so its probably an unfair comparison to the Siril one since it's a first try only.
