Do you Print your work?

Folks;

There are some superb images produced by folks on this site, and I found myself wondering the other day - how many people here print their images, and put them on the wall / exhibit them?

I realise that printing astro images requires care, and involves paper profiling, printer calibration, good quality papers, etc., and that many images are cropped in to emphasise the features in the sky, which can affect the print quality / size. But so many of the images here are very real works of art, and would make fine additions to the wall of a study / observatory / games room, etc. And exhibiting them in your home might even introduce others to the hobby.

Does anyone print their work?

Hi Warren, Yes I have printed much of my Astrophotography Images and have actually made books out of them.

With good quality double sided paper and ink I print the Images to a 10x8 size on A4 paper which leaves about 50mm clear space on the binding edge which is good for opening the book.

I take all the pages to Office Works where they put a hard cover of my choice on the front and rear and then fit a metal binding edge which is compressed and presto a photo book is produced.

I actually do this with all my photos if they prove to be worthy.

Well Leon, I've learned something today. I knew of photobook companies like Asukabook and Momento, but I didn't know Office Works did them too.

A book like that would be a great "coffee table" book, I think.

I haven't as yet as I have only been working on a few targets and not enough to make a calendar which I plan to make.
Obviously with this garbage weather we have been having it's been a bit of a drag getting out and taking images to then process and print.

Office Works just put the covers on and comperes the metals binding edge, you do have to print your own stuff though.
Later on today I will photograph the finished product to show you what it looks like.

I think Officeworks will print the whole book for you too. Wife had a cookbook of family recipes printed by them last year. Around $10 for a 22 page softcover.

I've use Vistaprint before, too.

Wish I had some images worth doing it with, though.

I've heard that print quality with Vistaprint can be a bit variable for fine work.

I was also looking at an article a little while back that dealt with printing images to metal. Outside my field of knowledge, but it did occur to me that it might make a good surface for astrophotography work. Anyone got any experience in this area?

Hi Warren,
I get my best images printed on frameless aluminium with a non reflective finish. Most common sizes from 40x30cm to 120x80cm. Best to print with Adobe 1998 colour space, 300dpi tif files.

They look great.

I just placed an order with Officeworks for half a dozen calendars to give as Xmas gifts. With 12x astroimages and some others for front and back covers, these large desk-type calendars cost $20 each. Not bad really. Delivery will be a week or so. Here’s hoping they are of good quality.

I use Pixel Pro in Newcastle. I email the files to them by Maildrop as they are often 400MB. They will freight on request.

Thanks Chris! I have a very good photo-quality printer at home, but I wondered about how they might look printed to metal. Much appreciated for the info!
