After a couple of days of massive amounts of rain, it was surprising to see a gap in the clouds on Friday night. They cleared around 10.30pm and although the seeing was poor, it was nice just to see any sky at all and we sat and watched Europa and then Io pop out from the shadow of Jupiter. Pretty cool!!

I, too, have found observing the Jupiter moon events interesting. In fact, a few years ago I completed a project to observe at least one of each moon event for each moon. That is, for each moon - an ingress and egress at Jupiter’s limb, a transit, an occultation disappearance and reappearance and an eclipse disappearance and reappearance. It took three Opposition seasons to complete the project!

Great work you’ve got some really nice shots! I love watching the transits through the eyepieces. It’s almost surreal following their movement & transit . I tried to get sone shots on Friday as well but the seeing was so poor the results were terrible.

Agreed, the seeing was difficult. We didn't mention that we deleted far more video than we kept including everything we took of Saturn.

I completely forgot to list for the four moons - shadow ingress, shadow transit and shadow egress events. So, yes a big project over an extended period to catch each event.

The shadow ingress and egress events are quite interesting to observe. I have observed all of these events, but they do require good seeing. For the shadow ingress event, the shadow forms an ever increasing notch in Jupiter’s limb. Eventually the shadow detaches from the limb and you have a normal shadow transit. The shadow egress will happen in reverse. These events are the easiest with Ganymede’s shadow.
