Cant ghange channels when a recording a program

Hi Guys we have a LG 43" Smart TV and it is only just over 2 years old and in general it works very well.

However if we wish to record a program, it wont let us change channels when the recording has started, or be watching a channel and then when the recording starts it tells us that we need to turn back to the channel it is about to record or it will turn off the recording.

Has anyone else ever experienced this issue, and this has happened from the day we bought it, it is not something that has just occurred.

So if anyone has any suggestions please

Hi Leon

If your TV only has 1 Tuner, then when that Tuner is set to record a particular Channel, it cannot then View another Channel.

If you want to Record a programme and then watch another Channel at the same time, you will need an external recorder, such as a DVD Recorder or a Set Top Box, which will have its own Tuner.

Some DVD Recorders have 2 Tuners, so you can record 2 different programmes (even different Channels) at the same time on the DVD recorder, whilst watching a 3rd Channel on the TV using the main TV Tuner.

Your TV has only a single tuner (as do most TVs on the market). You need a PVR with HDD usually sold with twin tuners, some have four. We have a Humax but prior to that had a TiVo, the latter which was the best PVR on the market until no longer supported in AU. With TiVo you continually had the last 30 minutes recorded on both tuners on whatever channel they were last set to even with the TV off.

Humax records the last 2 hours but only on the active tuner although 4 programs can be recorded (8 if on same broadcast channel frequency). Recording the last 30min or last 2 hours simply mans if you turn the TV on and realise a show is on you wanted to watch, simply press record and you’ll get the mast 2 hours with Humax. (Don’t change channel or you’ll reset the timer and lose the buffered program).

Panasonic make some nice PVRs too but their older ones now do not support some of the high definition broadcasts as they use a different codec.

My TV is not smart, so about 5yrs ago I bought a Fetch Mighty Box which has
3 recording tuners and 1 watching tuner, which allows recording of up to 6
channels simultaneously [depending upon if the channels are subscription ones or free to air] whilst watching a seventh. It also permits using catch up and pausing live TV[whilst making a coffee for example]. It will also automatically record each episode of a series.

Can Fetch be used just for the free to air channels without subscription? We nearly went with Fetch after TiVo but to get the features I had with TiVo (no subscription with TiVo), I would have to subscribe to Fetch. I didn’t want to pay for subscription to free to air just to get some recording options I had before without subscription so we ended up getting a Humax but there are other offerings such as Panasonic I mentioned before. I call them PVR but also known as DVR.

Not sure if a Fetch can pause live TV and switch between tuners at the same time, (TiVo could since it had two watching tuners that were both automatically recording to a pause buffer continually, Humax cannot as it only has one watching/recording tuner but 3 other recording tuners. On the Humax I can pause live TV on the active (watching) tuner but if I change channels and return the pause is lost although the program is still being recorded. I can record a series with the Humax which is good. The TiVo went one better by allowing recording an event based on an actors name. I.e. set record option based on actors name and anytime a movie with that actor is on it is automatically recorded.

We bought the Humax also to make our older TV smarter but have had issues with the YouTube app not being supported by Humax for a very long time. They fixed it once then it happened again. I have since bought an Amazon FireTV stick and if works well (no need to subscribe unless you want Amazon Prime features). If the Humax breaks I’ll probably buy a Panasonic twin or quad tuner DVR. Not ready to pay for subscription for free to air which is almost all shopping channels or lifestyle programs or sport but occasionally has something worth recording just so I can watch it later.

If you’re prepared to pay for subscription then Fetch is a good option. I’m not sure it can be used without subscription but if so even better.

Many thanks for your responses, I did do a bit of research and came across this twin tuner business, but just needed to check with you all, so problem solved i guess.
It is not that important as we don't record much, but sometimes it is nice to recoed something of interest while watching our favorite program.

Fetch requires a one off $1 'subscription fee' if you only want to use it for free to air tv....

Can pause live tv but, similar I think (my wife does the recordings) to what you have with the Humax...

Thanks. Good to know of that 'cheap' option with the Fetch. Gives me another choice if the Humax fails. I miss my TiVo though.

Hi Astro, Yes you can use Fetch for free to air only, no ongoing charges.
You cannot watch a second channel whilst a first one is paused, as it has only one watching tuner, but I see no reason why you couldn't watch a
recording whilst a programme is paused. Incidentally, it has 585hrs
recording capacity.

I have a question about set top boxes. My tv lists both radio and TV stations combined, so you can see all of them in the epg. My set top box ( Teac )separates radio from TV, so you have to go through a button pressing rigmarole to go from one to the other. Does anyone know of a set top box that combines TV and radio in the one epg so I can just scan and select?

Fetch set-top box puts the ABC and SBS radio channels sequentially after their respective TV channels. (I.e. ABC TV channels, followed by ABC Radio channels, then SBS TV, then SBS Radio, then Commercial FTA TV channels, then Subscription Streaming TV Channels.)
