Mt Kuring-gai fires - aftermath

Hi all

You may remember the fires at Mt Kuring-gai in January.. They started during IISAC2007 and some people may have got stuck on the freeway on the way home.

They were in the National Park, close to Gary Kopff's house, and also close to a friend of mine who lives only a few streets away. His house backs onto the bush and the fire came right up to his backyard. The great firefighters backburned from his backyard to keep the fire away.

Well about 3 months on, we went to his house for a lunch BBQ and went for a walk into the bush to see the aftermath of the fire.

Here's a few pics from that day, on the 1st April 2007.

The fire was quite devastating, with most of the scrub on the ground had gone. Re-generation is already occuring though, and it won't be long before it's back to normal.

Look great but the tree ones look a little over processed.

I like the "furry" trees in teh 4th one
always looks a bit funny.

while the trees recover tho, it takes the wildlife many more years to recouperate
poor buggers...

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the pictures. Over many years, I have walked this particular section of
the park, sometimes on a daily basis. It is strange how a place that was so
familiar can become unfamiliar, but having said that, I often say that
one can never simply state that you have been to a particular place. Instead,
one can only really state that one has been to a particular place at a particular
point in time.

Yours too Gary, the photos of the actual event are so haunting !
Amazing to see how much devastation is caused and yet the Aussie bush eventually recovers and comes back to life again.
