help with identifying a parrot

I have seen a M/F pair of small parrots in my yard twice in about a year or so.
I can find no parrot/ parakeet in my comprehensive book of Aus birds that looks anything like them.
The female has a dullish red cap and neck, with a distinct yellow collar reminiscent of a ringneck parrot [aka 28], pastille green breast with a bit
brighter green wings.
The male has stunningly bright red cap and breast, and the red extends over more of the body. It also has the yellow collar, but like the red it is very bright. Unlike the other parrot varieties we see, they are flighty in the extreme, the slightest movement catches their eye they are gone in a flash.
Can anyone help? Unfortunately, both times that they appeared I didn't have a camera [or phone] handy.

Thanks for the reply Mick. That is the nearest likeness that I could find, with
the major difference being the distinct narrow [about8-10mm] sharp edged yellow collar right around the front and side of the neck which the illustrations in my book don't have. Maybe it is a local variety of the breed.

Could be a hybrid Raymo?
Try googling Western Rosella
and see what it come up with?
There are quite a few birds that cross breed.
Also try the western rosella images on the google page.
Cheers

Smile

Thanks Ron, Judging by the very prominent yellow collar maybe these birds are 14s.

If that's the case Leon, it won't be of much use to me, as I have of course,
lost them again.
I'm glad I seem to have brought a little bit of humour into your day Peter.

I think the 14 thing would be lost on a lot of people who haven't lived in WA. It's been a while but I lived in Perth for 8 years so I was familiar with the 28. The 14 reference was gold.

Did they look at all like these? Mallee Ringnecks (seen near Blinman in the Flinders Ranges)...

Could be crossed with a 28: apparently they do interbreed, so 14 may indeed be accurate...

No Dean, red head, bright yellow collar just like the Ringneck Parrot, or
28 as they are known in W.A. Also, the male is very bright red over much of
the body.

Ron, glad you got it in the end, we can all do with some light relief.

Hi Dean, Thanks for the images; they reinforce my tentative opinion that
astroron and yourself were right, and they are hybrid W.Rosella/Ringneck Parrot [aka 28].
The yellow collar is a bit narrower and not around the cheek, but lower down
around the bottom of the neck.
Also, the rest of the bird that is not red is pretty much entirely a strong pastel
green.
