Being originally from WA and prior to joining the Airforce in the late 80's I never knew the game of Rugby existed .. sure didn't exist or was heard of in Perth back then. The first introduction I got to the game was back in 1989 in WAGGA during trade training about a month before the first State of Origin match when the QLD's and NSW's members started this banter .. anyone from WA, SA, NT or TAS just watched in amusement. This tribal banter went on for a month after the third final game. QLD's and NSW's would crowd into one of the trainees rooms to watch the game. The PTI's tried to teach the WA members a watered down version called Touch but in the words of the Vulcan .. the game was illogical.

To this day the time old question remains ... Why would you throw a ball backwards when moving forward?

I suppose the answer to your comment is that Rugby and Rugby League like many other sport’s are unique with unique rules

If your not familiar with a particular sport or didn’t grow up with it , the format and rules of certain sports appear to be unusual or foreign

Hands up as another ex RAAFie, through the 90's in my case. They still played Touch when I was in.

As a Vic RAAFie I still don't follow the rugby codes but then AFL does nothing much for me either at least on TV, a good AFL game is decent entertainment at the ground but I have never been to a game of either rugby code to compare. AFL on the TV I would rather read a book

Believe me Hans, no one east of the Vic border STILL to this day understands AFL. Nor should we. Aerial Ping Pong it still is

Actually that's exactly what I thought when it was the first time I saw it on TV. A weird hybrid mix of basket ball, hand ball and something else... played on a field with no corners... mind blown.

Yes! Though I should add.... AFL is a religion and as such is subject to the descriptions accorded faith.... AFL, is a statement of belief. The love of the game therefore does not admit to empirical study.

Hello,

AFL is so much better since the players stopped trying to get onto the top40 charts... those days tested the faithful. All the teams were broke and imho it was a good argument for the turn to paid professionals later in the 90's.
