slow page loading

I remember some time ago IIS got moved to a faster server and for a while it was great, but now its back to snail speed for me and has been for some time.

I just did a number of timed thread page loads. Pages were ones I hadn't visited before and with 10 or more posts.

Load times were between 17 and 20 seconds. Am i too impatient?
I'm on 512kb adsl

I'm on the same 512 ADSL and it only takes 5 seconds max for me, usually less.

What are other sites like?

No apparent problem here. Searches take about 4 - 6 seconds to complete.

Searches only take about 5-6 seconds but thread pages take a long time.

I'm on Netspace in Melbourne and even from work, thread pages load slowly on 1500kb Request DSL.

It takes < 5 secs to load any thread I haven't visited before.
But this morning I had noticed a slight delay when viewing attachment images, taking noticeably longer to download a 140kb image.

I just come back from browsing CN. That used to be the slow site but its delightfully quick compared to IIS now

Maybe its a Victorian thing?

I just installed Firefox and now I'm a happy chappy with pages loading in a few seconds

Ie6 has given me problems for a long time now with some sites (including this one) causing ie6 to crash. Running win2k I don't have the option to use ie7, so firefox it is

I have no problem with IE, I'm getting a wireless feed for my laptop which is 150 feet away from my office which is 200 feet away by cable from the street pole that I tap into.

Trust me, I should be dropping out or very slow because of the convoluted method and distance I go through but it still works almost instantly for me.

Just to let you know I have a dedicated laptop computer only for ISS and astronomy related stuff, therefore it works well. I suspect that people with only one computer that holds everything and runs some 60 to 70 processes in the background all the time might have it's share of problems. Throw in all the scanning software these days and you have a recipe for slowing down.

Yeah, it's an IE6 on win2k thing, Geoff. You would probably also have problems loading some secure sites with IE.

And yes, Firefox is great It probably appears faster though because Firefox displays the page as it loads, while IE tends to wait until the entire page is loaded before it displays anything.
