Mars - a hint of what's to come

In reply to Mike's thread in the General forum about this morning's seeing.

I was having such a great time with Jupiter, I finished my session with a quick Mars capture just to see if there was anything to "see" yet.

Starry Night says Mars is still only 4.7 arcseconds.

Still, I'm pretty happy to have captured the polar cap and what I believe is the major surface feature Syrtis Major?

It's cute, ain't it

Can't wait for it to get larger. I got to it too late last apparition.

Excellent result! I've been waiting to capture Mars after each Jupiter session, but it's too far South at the moment and behind a tree!

Well done!

Dave

In some strange way I'm more chuffed with my Mars capture than I am with Joops from this morning.

Somehow seems like more of an achievement

i can fully understand...i watched bird, anthony, the late erwin, mike, rumples all post some beauties as i was still pushing my new dob around.....

can't wait to give it a go myself.

PLUS, processing techniques since Mars almost feel like it has changed a heap as we have all tried differnent things and advanced it a long way.....it will be very interesting!

Would be great to see what you come up with, John

Your Jupiter images have been great.

Isn't it exciting to know that Mars is on the way back, while we still have Jupiter getting better and better

Nah. No surface detail to capture at uranus or neptune, mate.

And Jupiter remains my favourite target.

The mars image was just a pleasant bonus. A bit of fun at the end of a long Jupiter imaging session.

Thanks... again....david

Cool

I've got a n00b question. What do you mean "4.7 arcseconds"?? How is Mars at 4.7 arcseconds. I've been reading up on it, and I understand that and arcminute is 1/60th of a degree, and an arcsecond is 1/60th of an arcminute. That's all that's getting through my brain at the moment!

Great pic, by the way.

Nice work Matt. It's going to be a while before I can get a look at Mars, good to see your images in the meantime.

regards, Bird

hmmm... does it help if I say that the diameter of mars subtends an angle of 4.7 arc seconds at the earth/scope? Does that make any more sense? Otherwise I'm a bit lost as to what you don't understand.

Al.
