Smaug, the Greatest and Chiefest of Calamities!

The Fighting Dragons on Hubble Narrowband. Those of you that are LOTR will recognise the quote in the title from when Bilbo first spoke to Smaug. Anyway details are:

Scope: Stellarvue SVR102T-IS
Camera: Atik One 6.0
Filters: Astronomik 6nm
Guiding: Atik OAH, Atik GP mono camera and PHD2
Mount: Skywatcher EQ8
Acquisition: SGP
Processing: Pixinsight
Exposure 8x5mins each of Ha, OIII and SII

Still need more data as it is a bit grainy, but one cannot image through clouds!!

A really appealing image. The colour looks great and it all looks wonderfully dramatic. Have just read the Hobbit to my daughter and visited the WETA Workshop in NZ so I’m feeling the vibe!

Looking very promising. Nicely acquired. Processing needs a tiny tweak:

The background is milky and has a colour cast. Have a very close look at the left hand end of the histogram. You can set the zero point for Red 5100, Green 4000, and Blue 7300 counts out of 65535 higher with no loss of information. It comes out much more striking if you do that.

Hope that helps.

Best,
Mike
