media feeding frenzy

today in the Courier-Mail

http://www.news.com.au/couriermail/s...26-401,00.html

"SPACE ROCK ON COLLISION COURSE"

actually:

http://neo.jpl.nasa.gov/news/news017.html

"The probability of a collision in 2027 is essentially zero."

never let the facts get in the way of a good story

Shame about the headline, coz that's the most alarming part of the story

As a working journo for the last 20 years I have lost count of the number of times the sub-editors ruined a good story or changed its thrust by unnecessarily going OTT on the headline.

Trust me AN ... sensational headlines and their writers are as much a bugbear to us journos as they are to you!!!!

When I was a kid I worked as a copy boy at the John Fairfax building in Harris Street Ultimo (SMH, Sun and Newcastle Sun) and would take copy from the reporters out basket to the sub editors in basket ( and from the sub editors to the editors in box) so I would get to read the news before it was trimed ..mmm two different stories sometimes from the one the reporter typed to the one that hit the first edition.
But you must admit a remote possibility near 30 years in the future is pretty riveting stuff with a "good" headline .

We have a 1 in 45,000 chance of dying in a massive impact in 2036, and you are LAUGHING!!

Mind you, I have a 5 to 1 on chance of having died of old age by then!

If your going to go and you cant do anything about it then why worry.
Personally I would hold a big party and go in style. won't have to worry about cleaning up the mess the next day either.

Cheers

I always say I would buy the biggest scope on the never never and watch it coming with no worries about paying for it.
