Amazon Australia massive markup

I was complaining recently in another thread about how eBay had become a place where massive markups had replaced any kind of bargains. As a guide I noted a particular product (a Dremel 3000 2/30) that is advertised by Bunnings at $128 being sold by seemingly multiple eBay sites at $169 to over A$300. That was bad enough, so I just checked Amazon Australia thinking they might be competitive - but at A$413, they surely are not - by a massive margin approaching 220% over Bunnings. And to rub the salt in, the US Amazon are selling it for US$169 or roughly A$240 - say A$290 with post. Why is the Australian Amazon so grossly overpriced?

I think it's because all the stock is still sent individually from overseas when you buy it because they don't have warehouses in Oz yet. Also most of the stock isn't sold by Amazon themselves but rather through sellers using their platform, basically the same as eBay.
Personally I gave up on the Aussie Amazon on day one after coming to the same conclusion as you - that they're overpriced - plus they have very slow shipping.

The reason Amazon is hugely popular in the US, and the UK, is that they have all stock locally, it's cheap due to scale, and they will generally deliver anything the same day.

I also agree re eBay that there are some sellers trying it on with their prices but I've never had anything on there that I couldn't find at least one seller selling for the correct price. Plus eBay does their 10% off sales regularly enough that I just wait for one of those - especially for items coming from OS so that they basically pay the GST instead of me
