Finally got around to processing this in StarTools, with a touch up in ImageMagick.
Better control over dynamic range and star size and generally more detailed. Background extraction is more thorough. Side by side comparison with basic processing in ImageMagick, as in the previous version.
StarTools produces a very different result; and for anyone interested in the work flow, see attached txt.zip file.

A major difference using Startools. You have really brought this image out, very appealing particularly the depth in the clouds and the contrast, colours are enhanced nicely too.
Will need to check out the workflow when I get the chance, be interested in your method.
