New Forum

Hi all

In the General Astronomy forum category, you may notice a new forum called North Sydney Astronomical Society (NSAS). It's a new, private forum specifically for NSAS members, where they can discuss the ins and outs and goings on of their society, organise and discuss meetings, viewing nights, etc.

The President of the NSAS, Karl von Wootten (Karl), has been added as a moderator of the NSAS forum.

The main reason I've taken this step, is to achieve closer integration between IceInSpace and Astro Societies in Australia/NZ. The astronomy community in our region is small, and we need to work together to help build astronomy and give amateur astronomers more and better ways of being able to communicate with each other.

So if you're a member of the NSAS, you will need to:

1. Become a member of IceInSpace if you're not already (register). It would be helpful if you updated your profile to set "NSAS" in the Astro Society profile field.
2. Contact me, or get Karl to contact me, and give me your username so I can add you to the NSAS usergroup.
3. You will then be able to access the NSAS forum.

If you have any troubles, please contact me.

For everyone else, if you're the president or secretary of an astronomical society/club, and would like your own private forum on IceInSpace for your members, please contact me. For other members of astro societies who like the idea of this, bring it up at your next meeting!
The benefits include instant visibility, image attachments, private messages, announcements, forum subscriptions and email notifications, and of course being part of the wider astronomy community where you can share ideas, participate in discussions, ask questions and make friends!

As noted in the NSAS "new spot"...I think this is a good thing and a positive development.

I hope other clubs/socities take advantage of this as well...

I can now stay in contact better with the club as well as continue to enjoy IIS all from the comfort of my on chair! WOW!

A very good idea indeed Mike, great foresight on your part. I hope that a lot more clubs take up the offer, mine included.
The more the word is spread about our great pastime, the better it will be for all.

Great idea!!, as long as we dont end up having to scroll down a whole list
of clubs to get to the forums below, although I'm sure it will be modified.

That won't be a problem - when there is more, they'll go into their own forum category.

Message just received via Sydney Observatory broadcast from Guide, have a look at this image on site URL below. Maybe this is what we have been awaiting for since Hyakutake and Hale- Bopp Thanks Les D for the info. See here: " http://test.messier45.com:80/cgi-bin...t/IMG_1013.jpg " is an image of 2006 P1 taken from Norway. Note the bright twilight, it was taken from an urban location. The comet appears to be nearly as bright as some of the floodlights shown on the dereks of the cranes in the foreground. At present, from the observing reports I've had access to, the magnitude is possibly -(minus!!)3 !!!!!! (a little fainter than Venus). Get ready for Mon & Tue night next week

welcome nsas.. one thought .. why hide in the shadows ?
..private forum ..wouldn't the more direct interaction of a message board
be a good thing for attracting new members ?

I was thinking the same thing. I had to leave a few forums, (non astronomy) because a lot of talk ended up in the private forums of big southern clubs.

mmmmh. Have to admit my first thoughts were along these lines too. Welcome to NSAS, Its a great community we have here. But I do wonder about the necessity to enter the community then set up forums in secret. Why not do this elsewhere? Surely the idea is to share

There is some business that astro societies discuss amongst themselves (upcoming general meetings, results of those meetings, etc). Then there's other stuff that they'll contribute to the greater forum.
