Film Review: Passengers

Saw this today. Story about a colonisation starship en-route to a colony 120ly from earth. Things go wrong when it encounters an asteroid swam about 30ly outward bound. a fault awakens one passenger who then spends a year alone slowly coming unglued. He then stumbles on another of the 5000+ stasis pods on board containing the inevitable bombshell, Jennifer Lawrence, (Hunger Games), all growed up...

Its basically a romance with a good dash of CGI and some science in for good mix. Its pretty impressive but the plot gets a bit silly as a cascading systems failure causes the fusion drive to get destabilised. Things start to fall apart and they are forced to do some repairs that involve the bloke, (The dweeb from Jurassic World), having to open a vent from the outside to purge fusion plasma. Alas, Hollywood reared it dopey head here and he managed to survive the blast using a flame proof hatch covered he had prepared earlier (Gawd!)

Anyhow they stabilise the ship, which is still on course, with 88 years to go and only one stasis pod available. I wont wreck the ending, which was quite good. One to take the girlfriend/wife to see.

I liked the CGI and concept in general; the relationship stuff was a bit sooky but had some hard and nasty ethical twists. Apart from the glaring tripe, the Science was pretty good, (including a scene in a swimming pool when the gravity fails. (That was impressive!) Worth a watch and I'd give it about 7.5 Didn't feel like I had blown the dough.

Saw the movie and wasn't impressed with the science content: 3-4/10, max.
Major flaws included the asteroid field in the beginning and the the slingshot around Arcturus. Oh the "heat shield" scene was just pure Hollow-wood...
Kinda remind me of Titanic in space travel, except the ship didn't sink
