Is anyone else interested in monitoring the Earths electric field to get interesting insights into weather and associated terrestrial events ?

I must tell the members here we met today and are indeed neighbours.
Peter tells me he has built a radio telescope and other exciting pieces of equipment and the subject he raised in his op I found most interesting.

I should add Peter is a neighbour at the new place and not a hippy or feral like the folk around the old place and is mainstream.
I thought I should mention that given the hints I have given over the years about the strange folk I have run into at the old place.

Short answer is Peter is not even aware of them and it is my impression we are not dealing with such a person.
I have sent him a link so he knows about them and how they are regarded by mainstream.
I mentioned specifically your radio T project given he has built one.
Before becoming a farmer Peter had a most interesting career with one of the major companies and involved in a number of firsts which may surprise you.
I have suggested if he can to present his concept in the science section which I think will be of interest and determine if he has anything.
So no I don't think Peter is a crank and is scientific in method.
I explained how his post would cause folk to think EU and being post number one could cause folk to think he was spamming.

Peter is into measurements and recording of various data which he may share at some stage which suggests to me he is more scientist than philosopher.
But above all is a decent man who is way above the tarot card readers etc I have spoken about in the past.

That has confused me as well. The fact that we have heard no more from Peter says something ...

There is actually a great deal of science around measuring electric fields on the surface of the earth.
In the field of geophysics we call them telluric currents, and when measured in conjunction with the magnetic field we can determine the conductivity of the earth below the system. The sources of these fields generally arise due to the interaction of the solar wind and the geomagnetic field.
The specialisation related to this so the study of magnetotellurics.
It tells us nothing about local weather ( other than lightning) or 'brainwaves' or ether, or any of the wild theories associated with the 'electric universe' made so popular on Usenet many years ago...

I'm now retired and back !!!

Monitoring of the Earths electric field does actually give warnings of impending storms. The normal field of several hundred volts positive, starts to dip as the charge in the atmosphere is disturbed. This can even be somewhat cyclic and is a precursor to a storm. Note that some storms have absolutely no electrical activity in them and the chart remains staunchly positive, even whilst its raining.

Then again, I have seen the buildup to a bad storm some days beforehand, as the atmosphere just keeps changing. Its visible to the chart long before an observer or weather radar.

Now, imagine if you will, a map, with places of equal electrical potential joined, not barometric pressure as we are used to. One would see storms build up, decay and so on, and long before any effects were observable or on radar.

Other things are also detectable, meteor showers as they ionize the atmosphere and disturb the field, and earth quakes, as the rock 'let go' and the piezo effect causes a electrical discharge.

Now the big one, nuke tests.

I have recordings of the nuke tests in the pacific by the French, and a nuke emits a electromagnetic pulse which is easily detectable many 1,000's km away.

I now use a computer data logger so have traces I may be able to post of storms and the positive and negative lightning discharges. Obviously, one detector cant give a range or bearing, but a network could, and even predict where the next lightning strike is gunna happen. An interesting development.
