Doomsday Prepers..

Have you seen the show?
It reviews various folk who are preparing for a situation where things go wrong, very wrong such that social order is in a state of colapse, food distribution and production no longer what we have today.
The show looks at a "guest" preper who tells why they think they need to set up for "doomsday" and the measures they take.
The best I saw, not because it spelt survival, was a couple who purchased an old missile silo. It was so cool with so much space and robust fittings.
Some arm themselves with so many guns etc they could equip a small army.
I recall, maybe incorrectly, one guy with 350,000 rounds and capacity to make that many again.
When I moved to the bush the idea appealed that I would not be subject to credit squeeze and real estate market boom and bust cycles could have a vegie garden but I was never into the end of world thing.
So do you do it, maybe a little, you know candles and a camper stove in the garage in case the power goes out or do you have a bunker that makes the missile silo look like a kids cubby.
And mostly lets start a list..
What could end normality... A chunk of space rock like took out the big lizards maybe just facebook colapsing, net banking and pizza delivery.
Banking would seem a concern.
Once in Tabulam the phones went down, well you could not even pay cash at the shop because they had no set up other than computer. You could not withdraw cash. You could not buy petrol, beer or smokes not even a pie. The town stopped.
I have candles and a camper stove but when in the bush that is the way I live.
So do you and what could upset normal life.
Both long term and short term.
Alex

I feel I am more than prepared:

I have solar panel to charge up the Nexus DSC,
If worst comes to worst, I have the Herald Bobroff Atlas and a torch that can be charged with the solar panel.

I have freeze dried foods in the van along with water and a gas cooker with spare canisters.

I have countless bottles of red wine including Penfolds Grange and Bin 407...

Bring on the dark skies of anarchy....

P.S. Once the red wine runs out there really is no point going on, is there.......

I watched one episode. This guy and his 2 sons had some bunker or something in the desert. He was teaching his kids how to shoot guns, and his gun jammed or something and he ended up injuring his hand. Didn't have medical supplies or experience/knowledge on how to fix his hand so had to be taken to hospital. LOL. Doomsday prepper.

The missile silo one was like that. The guy was more likely to die in an accident in that silo than in any disaster.

That said, emergency preparedness is always advisable.
Australia has about 30 days fuel storage, and no longer has any serious refining capability, as most has been moved offshore.

All it would take is for China to have a crack at Japan, Taiwan, Vietnam, Brunei, Malaysia etc... over an island territorial dispute, and the trucks stop taking food to supermarkets. A veggie garden and some chooks would be a wise addition to the garden.

Truth is any crisis could see duper market shelves empty very fast.
Mmm I might get a twenty kg bag of rice and a few pkts of powdered milk.
And tea bags, canned fish and fried fruit.
And a military assault fully auto 50 mag rifle to hunt rabbits.
Oh and fishing line and seeds pkts of seeds.
Barbed wire for the compound.
Look for me on the show next year.

Having a thought about that Alex.

I reckon I'd be pretty well prepared on the farm, got a quarter acre of veges garden and half a dozen chooks (might need a rooster to keep things going in that dept.)

Have to plant some hops for beer and a build a still for some moonshine.

Might have to get a shotty though to keep the zombies out of the veges.

Cheers

No worries Matt

Only problem is that you park it in the paddock after all the rain we've been having you probably wont be moving until Summer at the moment.

The ground feels like a giant sponge at the moment.

As Alfred E Neuman used to say "What, me worry?". People have been preparing for the end of civilisation since i was a boy. I had an uncle who built a bomb shelter under his corn field because he was convinced that once the Yanks and Ruskis started chucking warheads at each other one was bound to fall in Alberta. He is long gone but that shelter is still there, probably used as a 'root cellar' now, and that is not what your thinking, it would be used to store root crops, like carrots, potatoes, turnips, etc. I hear that people have been turning old Minuteman missle silos into homes in South Dakota, hope they realise that their home location is probably still in a targeting computer somewhere.
