How good are the Losmandy G11's

Hi all was wondering just how good these G11's are compared to say a NEQ6.
For the extra $1000 bucks second hand it's a bit of a reach but I do want something built well that performs.
Any help appreciated Brad

I got mine secondhand just over a year ago and it has performed flawlessly, I only dabble in photography but can easily get two minutes unguided. Go to is superb and if you enjoy aesthetics it looks like a proper piece of engineering, no fancy curves or plastic, just old fashioned machined metal.

Just for curiosity, where do the Astrophysics Mach 1's fit in here? Are they on a similar level to the G11?

I have an AP and G11. Both are nice, both track well. But the G11 is no AP. The AP is easier to use, easier to break down.

G11's have one the best builds available... all machined and done with precision. They have been producing exquisite results for years. They are upgradable and have seen a lot of changes over time. I've used a lot of mounts and only just gave up my G11, for the second time. I miss it already. Having said all these positives... there's a BUT. They are not a toy and they take time to learn both in terms of maintenance and operation. They also require tuning for imaging. I have not used an A.P. so I cant compare that one but I doubt many mounts come close to a G11 for the money.

G8

Hi guys I've found a retailer with the GM8 equatorial mount for 1800 delivered.
Does anyone have any idea what these mounts are like?
Seems a pretty good deal and with the quality of the G11.
Any help appreciated Brad

The G8 has much lower capacity than the G11 and smaller worm wheels, hence typically much worse periodic error. If you're considering photography then it's not in the same league as the G11.
Cheers,
Andrew.

The only mount I've ever used. Still does the job.

I have the G11 as well. I can only get 30sec unguided, but I am still learning how to polar align (i have bad views of the SCP), and have only had a chance to use it for 5 hours. But the mount is of excellent quality, and I can see it has much more potential, I just need to work on it a bit more.

Brad,

I hesitate to suggest they are an excellent mount for the price as I might want to pick up another one for a good price

Part of the longevity of the mount is that they have been upgraded almost constantly over the years and even the oldest mounts are capable of being updated to the current.

Regards

Paul
